Decorating an interior: coherence before effect

Updated: Oct 21
A beautiful interior is not a mere collection of pretty things. What strikes you when you walk into a successful space is a sense of rightness: everything seems to be where it belongs. That feeling is built, room by room.
Start with the light
Before choosing a colour or a piece of furniture, observe the light: where it comes from, at what time, how strong it is. The same shade changes completely between a north-facing room and one facing south.
A restrained palette
Three or four colours that echo one another are often enough to give character to a whole house. A restrained palette creates continuity from one room to the next and lets the spaces breathe.
Materials create character
Wood, stone, linen, brass, ceramics: materials give an interior its depth. They age well, develop a patina and tell a story that imitations never do.
Few objects, well chosen
One object you love, shown at its best, is worth more than ten you no longer notice. Empty space is part of the composition; it gives importance to what remains.
Use before style
A room must work well first: circulation, storage, lighting, comfort. Style then dresses that use. An interior designed this way stays pleasant long after trends have changed.
Decorating is ultimately about making choices and sticking to them. Coherence takes patience, but it is what gives a place its lasting elegance.
